artist statement
In Jewish tradition it is said that when you take an image of someone,
you take a part of his or her soul. When looking at Alison Bradley’s
newest body of photographic images, the Ladder Series, a reference
to Jacob’s Ladder, one has the sense that these objects (the
shoes of a child we love, a glass from which we drink wine, a suitcase
we traveled with, etc.) speak to the deepest part of us. Contained
within are fragments of recollection, objects vaguely recognized
yet somehow intensely familiar. The photographs explore
the mystery of what we call soul, or time, where past, present and
future become simultaneously visible
and yet indistinguishable.
